Our RMBIers
From RMBI to consulting and solving real problems
Coming to Hong Kong and UST from Finland, I didn’t have much of an idea of the different degrees and specializations the university had to offer. I was conflicted in my first year between the different schools of engineering, business, and sciences, wanting to get as much out of my degree as possible. RMBI helped me solve that problem by allowing me to cover both the softer and the more technical aspects of modern businesses in a compact way.
Before university, I did not know what ‘consulting’ meant, but learning about the job via classes and clubs instantly made me think it was something I wanted to pursue, mainly because of the variety of the work and the associated learning curve. Working on different projects and changing topics, teams, and clients from time to time keeps things fresh.
The RMBI capstone project our team did for Bloomberg was a good example of that – working with a great team on a very specific problem that required an understanding of the business context as well as in-depth knowledge of data science. We learned a lot about project management, client engagement, and data analysis, all skills that I still use day-to-day as a technical consultant.
The classes and simpler exercises we go through in university are of course useful, and form a base to build on later, but it’s important to make sure those skills are applied to real-life projects and issues – and the RMBI capstone projects serve exactly this purpose. Technical skills are useful, but working experience with real problems and real people is what helps drive a career in the long run, so give your capstone project the weight and effort it deserves!
