Our RMBIers
RMBI is a fascinating program that prepares you not only for a career in risk management but also in a variety of fields. Only very few programs would allow its students to launch successful careers ranging from government administration to software engineering and management consulting. The program draws its expertise not only from the business faculty but also from those in the engineering and science faculties. The flexibility the program structure offers is unparalleled. I for example, took a minor in social science on top of the RMBI major, which lends itself well to the understanding of geopolitical risk as well as other associated issues. A good risk manager shines in his or her ability to not only identify and quantify risk, but also how to interpret and ultimately manage it. This is impossible without a holistic education and high level of flexibility in the curriculum, which the RMBI program aptly provides.
Another thing I particularly appreciate about the program is that learning is based on small cohorts of around 50 students. Having the ability to know almost everyone is a blessing and it means that we get more opportunities to collaborate. What is particularly interesting is that RMBI students are not all alike. Some of us are mathematical whizzes, others born orators, and some, the Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos of our generation. This creates a very unique learning environment, whereby we could each bounce off of each other, and improve as a group.
I am thankful for the numerous corporate exposure opportunities I have been given over the past 4 years. This has made my learning practical and at the same time rooted in academic theory. I have heard a saying that over 90% of what is taught in undergraduate studies becomes useless once you start at the workplace. I am sure that this is definitely not true for RMBI. The early integration between practical work and theory, as well as gaining feedback from both sides have been particularly rewarding for my growth.
