Project Insight: uncovering the complexities of global value chainsRecent shocks laid bare just how little we know about global value chains (GVCs) and how these complicated firm-level networks can spread shocks and significantly disrupt economic growth and financial markets. It is therefore important to understand GVC dependencies and monitor their shifts and trends, but there are significant data gaps. Work that the HKMA and BIS are doing through Project Insight aims to address these gaps by building a timely and comprehensive GVC monitor to help central banks and policymakers better monitor supply chain developments and their associated economic and financial impacts. Leanne Si Ying ZHANG Leanne is a Senior Economist at the Research Department of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, where she leads Project Insight in collaboration with the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) exploring how to better monitor developments in global value chains by combining structured and unstructured granular data. Prior to her current role, she was an Advisor at the BIS Innovation Hub Hong Kong Centre, where she led central-bank-digital-currency (CBDC) and big-data-analytics projects. She has published papers on CBDC, climate risks and global supply chains, and her work has been featured in the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Economist, among others. She holds an MPhil in Economics degree from the University of Oxford, where she was a Louis Dreyfus-Weidenfeld Scholar, and an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Economics from McGill University. |
